About this conference

The electives conference is an annual event held by the Medical Schools Council Electives Committee. It brings together medical school elective academic leads and coordinators, charitable and national bodies and medical students who have recently returned or will shortly begin a medical elective placement.

The title of this year’s conference is “Improving quality and outcomes in medical electives.” It will focus on how electives staff and medical school processes can support quality and improvement in medical electives and be aided by student input on their experiences during the elective block.

The conference is being held on Friday 15 November 2019 from 10am – 4.30pm at Woburn House, 20 Tavistock Square, London, WC1H 9HD. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Student/graduate attendees

While the main demographic for the conference is medical school staff, the student perspective is invaluable to any conversation relating to medical electives, therefore student/ graduate attendees are encouraged. There is also an opportunity for post-elective students/graduates to present a poster or narrative on their experience (see here.)

Spaces are limited and run on a first come first served basis so early registration is encouraged. The invitation is open to students who have returned from an elective in the last year (including graduates) and those who will be going on an elective within the next academic year. The conference is free for medical students and graduates. One bursary to cover travel expenses (and accommodation if necessary) is available per medical school. To be nominated for this bursary, you will need to contact the head of electives at your medical school for nomination.
